Although I was only twelve years old when I first met the Lord, I remember it quite well. At that time in my life, I had felt quite a bit of uncertainty about many things, but I think the thing which concerned me the most was the future, especially my eternal future.
Being raised in a Christian home had exposed me to the thought of eternity and an almighty God who would one day judge each one according to his works. How would I stand in that judgment? Even though I did not feel I was particularly “sinful”, I knew in my conscience that I had no righteousness of my own to stand on! Just about that time, during some evangelistic meetings in the church my family attended, I heard that, as a sinner, I should have suffered God’s judgment, yet this very God, the One who had every right to condemn me, took my place and was judged instead of me because He loved me. At the end of one of those meetings, an invitational hymn was called which contained the following verse:
Just as I am, though tossed about
With many a conflict, many a doubt;
Fightings within, and fears without,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!
It was then and there that I decided to come to Him to receive Him by opening up to Him in prayer. I don’t remember what I prayed but I remember feeling a weight had been lifted from me!
Since that time, I have realized that what really happened when I prayed was that I was born, regenerated with God’s own life. Now God Himself was living in me, and not only in me but in millions of others! I was born into a big family! Today, not only do I appreciate my Lord but I also appreciate and enjoy His family, His brothers and sisters, with whom I enjoy His presence daily!
You too can be born with His divine life into such a family! Simply ask Him to cleanse you from your sins and to come into you as He came into me!
